Cops That Care
The Mountain View Police Department is having their annual Cops That Care event on December 18. This program has been amazingly successful for the past 7 years, but it wouldn’t be possible without the help of the community. This year the program is expecting over 1,700 kids the show up for a toy. Wow! That’s where we come in.
We need to donate toys, and lots of them. The toys need to be new and in their original packaging. They need to be unwrapped. The toys can be for any age, from infants to teenager. Some of the most popular items from years past have been Barbie, Hot Wheels gift packs, board games, remote control cars, soccer balls, footballs, Hello Kitty, puzzles, Easy Bake Oven and Play-Doh. Gift cards are always great for kids that are older. Bikes and Radio Flyer Wagons are also fabulous donations and would be greatly appreciated. Even new packages of diapers, new baby socks and new blankets would be helpful for a family in need. Whatever you feel compelled to give, the Cops That Care program can find a way to give it to someone that needs it. The donations are accepted 7 days a week, from 7 am to 7 pm at the MVPD. This program was designed for families that might not be able to afford purchasing a Christmas present for their children.
One of the ideas that I like most about this event is that the kids get to pick out their own toy. A Police officer doesn’t just hand them one and their parent doesn’t get to pick out the toy; the child gets to pick out whatever they want!
The event is December 18, 2010 from 9 am to 6 pm. Mountain View children should arrive with an adult and bring proof that they are a Mountain View resident, either their school report card (hopefully the grades are good!), a Child Care enrollment form, or an official ID card for the child. The families might wait in line for a while due to the amazing success of this event, so wear your coat. You can also have your photo taken with Santa. It’s a heart-warming event for everyone involved and if you have never participated, now is the perfect time to pick up a toy and drop it off at MVPD. This program was founded by and is organized by Officer Ron Cooper, a cop that cares. I just love Mountain View.
