Go Fly a Kite

Tuesday, 12 Apr 2011

April is National Kite Month and Mountain View just happens to have a really nice official Kite Flying Area. It’s on Shoreline Blvd, just inside the gate-house at Shoreline Park. I took this short video of a few families that were flying kites there this week. It’s a nice flat, windy area that is perfect for kites and picnics. Eagle Park would also be a nice area to fly a kite if you could manage to get there when there weren’t any soccer games. Do you have any favorite kite flying locations around town? Please leave your ideas in the comments below.

Here’s a link to a website that shows how to make your own kite.

According to the National Kite Month website, the first kite was invented in 200 BC by General Han of the Han Dynasty in China. He flew a kite over the wall of a city that he wanted to invade. Then he measured the string that it took to flew over the wall so that he would know how long of a tunnel he had to dig in order for his men to sneak into the city. Clever guy, that General Han; he makes me proud to be Chinese. Let’s all enjoy the month and go fly a kite.
