Summer Reading Program
The Summer Reading Program at our Mountain View Library kicks off this week. I’ve been looking forward to hearing about everything planned so I went to the library this morning. Tonight is the official start with a festive Latin music performance by ZunZun in Pioneer Park. You can bring your picnic dinner and sign up for the kid’s program tonight, or sign up ahead of time online. Children decide how many books they want to read over the summer and confirm their goal with a librarian. There will be a log at the library and they can keep track of their progress. If anyone needs help deciding how many books to read or which books to select, there are plenty of librarians working in the children’s area tonight to help you. Anytime the library is open you’ll be able to get help signing up for the program. And there are fun prizes involved. (Prizes make everything so much more fun!)
There are lots of events planned to go along with the Children’s Reading Program. These events are Thursdays from 2:30-3:15. Some of the Thursday afternoon events will include a magic show, a puppet show, story telling, and a bubble artist.
The Family Reading program is similar. You’ll keep the log of books at home. Each person in the family needs to complete reading a book before your family can select your book prize.
The Teen Zone has a summer reading program and all kinds of other adventurous workshops and classes going on. I saw that there was Henna Workshop and a Beading Jewelry class being offered this summer. Wow, I’d love to watch a Henna demonstration.
The Adult Reading Program will be mapped out on a bingo card. The goal is for you to explore all the different type of resources that our library has to offer. Complete each task in a row and come show your bingo card to the Reference Desk for your prize. The tasks will be things like read a mystery, check out and watch a DVD, visit the History Center, and read a graphic novel. Sounds fun, huh? See the Reference Desk to sign up and get your bingo card. The Adult Reading Program starts June 15th. For details on any of the Summer Reading Programs or to sign up for any of them, visit the library website. I love that there are t-shirts for sale in the library gift shop that promote the summer reading programs. Have a wonderful summer and keep on reading…

Great write up of this great community program. And thanks for the tip about the t-shirts in the Friends Lobby Shop. They’re really terrific designs this year!
This is so cool! I’ve missed the summer reading program I used to do as a kid. I’ll have to re-hash old times with the adult version.
