Summertime Craft Projects

Tuesday, 02 Aug 2011

Are you crafty? Do you realize how many books our library has that are about crafts? It will amaze you, seriously. There’s a fabulous craft display in the lobby of the Mountain View Public Library right now. It features numerous handmade items from library staff. It turns out that they’re a pretty creative group. It includes several outrageously complicated origami items, a quilt, some jewelry, handmade ceramics, paper-mache and a computer generated model of a ship.

What I was really excited about was the vast variety of books that we have that are about arts and crafts. Just so you know, this is one area that I’m quite familiar with and it’s usually where you’ll find me in our library, but when I saw all of these books together, I was in heaven. Here’s a short list of some of the books that are on display right now: Ceramics, basket making, stained glass, quilting, knitting , more knitting, felting, wedding crafts, dough crafts, crochet, origami, green or recycled items turned into crafts, hand weaving, candles, paper-mache, and more knitting. And there’s even one called “Man Crafts” by Popular Mechanics. It includes manly activities like fly tying, leather tooling and whittling.

It’s summer time and some of us have a little bit of extra free time right now. It’s the perfect chance to experiment with something new and creative. There are also lots of DVDs about how to do crafty activities. I just love our library and I love Mountain View.

Really great advice! I will have to start looking through some library books for new craft projects for my daughter and I.

There’s a book out called Crafting with Cat Hair, but I’m not sure we’ll be getting it for the library. (We do have an endless supply of cat hair, though.)
