The Berlin Wall of Mountain View
As unexpected as it may sound, we’re telling the truth. Few residents know about two large slabs of the Berlin Wall that have been memorialized right here in Mountain View. The gigantic cement pieces are tucked away in the parking lot of the Bayside Business Plaza, near Google’s world headquarters. The address is 2685 Marine Way, Mountain View. Both of the pieces still have the original graffiti on them and one of them reads, “Wir Lieben Dich” which translates to “We Love You.” This year is the 20th anniversary of fall of the Berlin Wall. After paying your respects, go to the world-famous Dittmer’s Gourmet Meats & Wurst Haus for an authentic taste of Germany. This fine establishment is a sacred-site for meat lovers from hundreds of miles away. We recommend mouth-watering Nuremberg Brats and German Salami for all your carnivorous friends. And for your vegetarian friends, well… ummm, we recommend that you go someplace else. And if you’re going to do things correctly, you’ll need some German bread to go with your German meat.
Go to Esther’s German Bakery just across the street. Don’t even bother going if you aren’t going to get some Bienenstich, or Bee-Sting Cake. We promise; it’s everything you hope it’ll be.

As a volunteer in the Mtn. View History Center (2nd floor of the library), I stumbled upon an article about the Berlin Wall a few years ago; however, there was not exact address given. Over quite a period of time searching, I eventually found it, and what a find!! Its well worth the effort, and must be one of the City’s best kept secrets. There are quite a few pictures and articles about it in the History Center for anyone who is interested in learning more about it.
Thanks, Heidi for putting it on this wonderful website for all to see!!
Same foir me: I was visiting a client and saw it. I was very surprised to find a piece of history in this parking lot. Too cool!
I discovered this by accident too while cold calling in the area….I thought “what the heck is this thing doing here and great someone tagged it”. When I realized what it was my eyes got teary, my heart was humbled. I took my wife and kids to see them…total chicken skin moment!!
Background on the Wall pieces? According to Wikipedia: The owner of the Bayside Business Plaza is a German born American Business man who originally owned a construction company on the current site. He had a piece of the wall shipped over but when they opened the create there were two pieces inside.
I found the wall by mistake a few years back, I was blown away that it was just sitting there in the back of the parking lot. Heidi, Can you find out the back-story? Who brought it over and how?
Just wanted to say that I love your website. Hope you keep this going.
