Time for Your History Lessons
Do you know the history of Moffett Field? That’s what we thought! You should be ashamed of yourself. There’s no reason to be in-the-dark any longer. Get over to the Moffett Field Museum and ask for a tour. It’ll take about an hour and you’ll be well informed by the time you leave. The docent who takes you around the small museum will probably be a veteran and will tell you all about Hangar One and the USS Macon’s dreaded last flight. You’ll hear hair-raising stories about shooting down enemy planes! They even have a vintage machine that makes dog-tags. Ask for your own custom-made dog tags. Really, this museum will cover everything you ever wanted to know about the Navy and aviation, but were afraid to ask! Next you’ll head over to Castro Street to continue with your history lessons. You’ll be visiting the Jehning Lock Museum. Check out the antique safes that were once packed with bars of gold and silver. Maybe you’ll discover a few tips on how to crack a safe! Examine old handcuffs that held the bank robbers of yesteryear. This museum is located inside the historic Ames Building on Castro Street.
After the museums, everyone should go over to Country Gourmet for some old-fashioned comfort food. They’ve been serving Mountain View for decades and we feel like we’re back in Mom’s kitchen the minute we walk in the door.

Its a great little museum!! And the fact that its right there, right at Moffett Field itself, makes it all the more meaningful. And as you said, even the docents are a part of history themselves!! The Mtn. View History Center on the 2nd floor of the Public Library has quite a bit of information on Moffett Field, too, in addition to many neat old photos.
