An Afternoon of Enlightenment
We know a peaceful way to enjoy an afternoon. Browsing at East West Bookstore is a most relaxing experience. This unique store is bursting with unusual items from “Karmic Candles” to “Energy Earrings” and books on topics ranging from communicating with animals, to communicating with the spirit world, to healing an injured soul. Ever wanted to get an “Aura Portrait,” or a Tarot reading, or be hypnotized? Then this is the place for you. After your enlightening shopping experience, you’re going to float across Castro Street and have lunch at Café Baklava. They’re famous for their Turkish Kuzu (lamb) kebabs and Adana (spicy beef) kebabs.
The sidewalk tables are especially perfect on a sunny afternoon and be sure to check-out the wine list. We just love these lazy afternoons!

My wife and I frequently go to East West Bookstore after a meal on Castro Street. It is really relaxing to browse the interesting spiritual “stuff”. Once I bought a copy of an award winning translation of Sun Tsu’s Art of War which I would probably not think of doing otherwise. We have also enjoyed Cafe Baklava on the “patio” (parking space!) in the sun. The waiter recommended the soup of the day and even guaranteed that it would be great!
This is a good place to go if you’re feeling the least bit frazzled, out of sorts. The place will calm you down, smooth out the bumps ‘n wrinkles, and chances are great that you’ll go away feeling a whole lot better than when you went in…you might even go away with a pretty dandy purchase or two, a “present” for yourself or a lucky friend.
Sue, I had a great time at the didgeridoo concert by Paradiso. East West never ceases to amaze me.
Thank you, Heidi! And may I mention that not only do we have wonderful gifts and books, but we also have great speakers on a multitude of topics, sometimes 3 times a day, many of which are free to attend! So, enjoy dinner or lunch on Castro Street, and come hang out by our famous fountain or listen to an inspiring talk.
Namaste!
The Doner Wrap is awesome as well: Thin slices of slowly cooked lamb, grilled peppers, tomato, onions and mixed pickles wrapped in tanour bread served with house salad or french fries!
8 minutes of eating, 8 hours of bad breath—worth every savory moment.
