Bird Watching in Mountain View

Wednesday, 14 Sep 2011

There are several interesting bird related activities coming up at the Rengstorff House. An exhibit, “Birds of Shoreline: Aflight!” just opened. It will be on display until November 20th, 2011. It features photography of over forty local bird species found in the Mountain View area. All of the photos were submitted by local bird photographers. Some of the different categories in the contest were: birds feeding or looking for food, egrets and their plumes, song birds, and Burrowing owls.

Thursday, Sept 15th is the opening reception for the show. There will be a panel discussion, “Bird Photography: Initiation, Engagement, Equipment and Ethics” at 7:00 pm. The panelists include local birding experts like Lisa Myers of Let’s Go Birding, Patricia Rouzer, who is a photographer and former board member of San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory, Luis Villablanca, Mountain View resident and amateur photographer, and Phil Higgins. Phil is charming and he’s our local Burrowing Owl Specialist.

The burrowing owl photo shown here was taken by Deepankar Das and the pair of Avocets was taken by Colin Beard. Thank you to these two photographers for sharing these images with me to use on this website.

There is another event on Sunday, October 9, 2011 and this one is for Children and families. “Shoreline Bird Safari” will be from 2:00 – 4:00. Everyone will take a look at the photography in the exhibit, and learn about bird identification and observation. They will all journey out onto the beautiful trails surrounding the Rengstorff House and Shoreline area and practice their new bird-watching skills. Sounds to me like they might also be learning about how important it is to use their ‘inside voice’ when it’s time to watch birds. Everyone will earn a “Bird Watcher” patch. This day will be facilitated by a former school teacher and current Shoreline at Mountain View volunteer Ranger and Environmental docent. Children aged 8-16 with parent or guardian supervision only. Be sure to wear comfy layered clothing and bring some binoculars if you have them.

Call 650/903-6392 to RSVP.

We’re so lucky to have this incredible 700 acre park right here in our city. It’s hard to imagine that it was built on landfill. Talk about turning trash into treasure! I just love Mountain View.
