Community School of Music and Arts
I went to the ceramics exhibit at Community School of Music and Arts today. The show, Elements of Fire, is up through Sept 25. It features two artists, Jonathan Huang and Gabe Toci. The exhibitions at CSMA are in the Mohr Gallery and even if there were no art on the walls, the award-winning building is a beautiful, peaceful place to spend some time. But when there is some kind of amazing artwork added, it’s just magical. Right next to the gallery is Tateuchi Hall, where CSMA has all kinds of outstanding cultural performances including the upcoming 2nd Annual Silicon Valley African Film Festival which is Oct 14 and 15, 2011.
The fall semester is starting soon and there’s still room in the classes. The catalog of courses is online. The classes that always look most interesting to me are the art classes, like the collage, painting, or ceramics classes, but the school offers far more music classes than they do art. Apparently Mountain View has lots of musically-inclined residents; I’m just not one of them. Maybe someday I’ll try the “World Harmony Chorus” class because the catalog says “Everyone welcome” even an absolute beginner. Or perhaps the “Intro to Ukulele” class since I saw how popular the ukulele events are at Dana Street Coffee and I heard that people are driving to Mountain View from as far away as Santa Cruz to be part of our ukulele community.
I love that CSMA has been part of our community since 1968 and that they’ve grown from a tiny school with 28 students to the incredible organization that they are today, serving over 30 schools and 7,500 students. They also have over 1000 private music lessons per week for both children and adults. As a non-profit that is doing fabulous work in our community, we need to support them to keep the arts alive and strong in Mountain View.

Thanks soooooo much, Heidi, for sharing your wonderful “heidi insights, enthusiasm and ‘magic’” with your readers. CSMA has a great arts advocate, creator, champion and more in YOU! I see a future for you with the ukulele!!!
