Dive Bar Tour…

Thursday, 19 Aug 2010

You need to start the Dive Bar Tour at Fred’s Place. It’s the cutest little Cheers-type bar off of Old Middlefield and you may have never even noticed it. Fred’s has foosball, pool and 6 TVs. Next, head over to Bert’s Alibi on the El Camino. The crowd is young and friendly and the kamakazis are readily available. Jägermeister seems to be a favorite. The next bar is more difficult to find. It’s called Mervyn’s, although the name is almost irrelevant, since there isn’t a sign (other than the paper one taped to the front door). The address is 236 Castro Street. Walk down the alley/walkway that leads connects the businesses on Castro Street to the back parking lot in the 200 block. The entrance to Mervyn’s will be most of the way down the walk, on your right-hand side. Score! You just found Mountain View’s biggest secret. It’s really small and full of friendly people. The drinks are cheap and you can order Chinese food from the bartender and it will be delivered to your table from the restaurant that connects to this bar. You pay the waiter for your Chinese food, not the bartender. It’s so funny to be drinking a Screwdriver or Gin & Tonic and have Sweet and Sour Chicken arrive at the table.

Your final destination is The Office. They have the best karaoke nights anywhere and the bartenders are really friendly. taxiAnd just incase you need a ride home, Yellow Cab is 650-254-1230, or 800-595-1222. Have fun and arrive home safely. Mission accomplished. If you go on the “Dive Bar Tour” please let everyone know your thoughts…

Fred’s is just down the street from my house, and we’ve become semi-regulars. It’s a great place to meet friends and get a cheap stiff drink.

Sounds great, I didn’t know about any of these places. Let’s form a dive bar team.

Went to Mervyn’s with Erik, great dive bar smack in downtown MV! I passed in front of it a gazillion times and not noticed it! Cool place, just dive in!

What an awesome way to see the not-so-dark underbelly of Mountain View. These are great hole-in-wall places, where you can leave the ferns and the fruity martinis behind. Way to go “I Love MV”!
