Drive Less Challenge
Have you heard about the competition that Mountain View is having with other peninsula cities? It’s called the Drive Less Challenge. We’re all going to try to accomplish the same thing and the goal is to use our cars less, but the fun part is that we’re competing against Menlo Park, Palo Alto and Burlingame. We all know that there’s some kind of unspoken pecking order among peninsula cities, and now is our chance to show that we can totally kick butt. And I mean that in the friendliest way possible.
The contest is April 22 through May 5, 2010. You need to go to the Drive Less Challenge website and register for the challenge. After you register, you’ll be able to log your miles. The idea is to make less solo trips in your car, but you can still use your car. Maybe you could organize a small carpool of neighbors to do a few errands together. Or figure out the best route for everyone in your family to ride their bike to work and school. Or use public transportation. Or, my personal favorite, put on your favorite walking shoes and hit the streets. The Drive Less Challenge website has ideas and tips about how to take public transit or find a good bike route incase you need assistance.
When you register for the event, you can register as a group and participate with your school, work, church/synagogue or neighborhood.
There will be prizes awarded for:
*most green travel (biking, walking, transit, carpool – most miles and most trips!)
* greenest group (workplace, school, faith community, etc)
* least driving (you need to log every day to be eligible for this)
* greatest green improvement (you need to add your “baseline” to be eligible for this prize)
The contest is being organized by Burlingame Citizens’ Environmental Council, Green Mountain View, Menlo Park Green Ribbon Citizens’ Committee, and Palo Alto Community Environmental Action Partnership. It’s a really nice idea and it encourages us to all try to figure out a new or alternative method of getting around that doesn’t have a negative impact on the environment.
