HOPE Services of Mountain View
This is Carlos. He’s a Courtesy Clerk at Safeway on Shoreline Blvd. We heard about Carlos through HOPE Services. HOPE Services is an amazing organization that has a full range of social services for people with developmental disabilities in six local counties, and they have a local office in Mountain View. Carlos attended the program at HOPE Services in Mountain View, which included math, computer skills class and a job-prep class. By the end of his job-prep class it was obvious to Chris Wright, a HOPE Services Community and Employment Developer, that Carlos was ready to get a job in the community. HOPE Services may have helped Carlos get his foot in the door, but Carlos blew them away during his interview. He was hired on the spot. Safeway was particularly pleased that Carlos is bilingual. This is very helpful when a Spanish speaking customer needs help communicating to a Safeway employee.
Carlos told us that he thought he was “never going to find a job” before HOPE Services helped him. He used to feel shy and unable to speak to strangers. Now that he works as a Courtesy Clerk, he deals with all kinds of Safeway customers. He feels much more outgoing now and has overcome his shyness. So the next time you are shopping at Safeway on Shoreline Blvd. look for Carlos and tell him “Hello.”
If you have a business or know of one that may possibly be able to hire a HOPE Services’ client, please contact Chris Wright at HOPE Services. Each client that has a job in the community is provided job coaching to teach them exactly what is expected of them in the workplace. The Job Coach typically goes to work with the HOPE Services’ client for a few hours everyday until the newly hired person fully understands the tasks that they are expected to complete on the job. The Job Coach duties also include explaining the employers’ policies and procedures that are related to the job. Did you know that people with developmental disabilities are more likely than most to use less sick days and not be late for work? It’s true. HOPE Services prepares them to be top-notch employees and from what we’ve heard, their employers are always pleased.
HOPE Services is providing a tremendous service to our community and to those who might not be able to find employment without a bit of help. We want to thank them for making a difference in our community.

I’m so happy to see that there are good people out there trying to do good things for others and when I saw this interesting article on craigslist I felt HOPE.
Good Job everyone!
Way to go Carlos! MVHS is VERY PROUD of you! HOPE thank you for all you do for our students.
Thank you for featuring Carlos. Carlos attends both HOPE Services and adult school classes. We are very proud of him.
Congrats to Carlos and Hope Services. Chris has dedicated her last 35 years with Hope Services finding the right match with client and corporate. Visit the Kids Cafe at the Childrens Discovery Museum in Downtown San Jose to see clients in action.
Carlos had the opportunity to attend classes offered at Hope Services by credentialed teachers from Mountain View-Los Altos Adult School. He is “success story” indeed and it is nice to see his profile highlighted here.
Carlos’ story is an inspiration to all of us. HOPE Services, thank you for helping others believe in themselves and discovering their hidden talents. HOPE is an organization that “Helps Other People Expand” their talents. Way to go Carlos!!!
Carlos is an awesome employee at Safeway. He always has a smile to share with me and follows it up with a nice polite “hello”. It makes my trip to the grocery store complete when I see Carlos. Thanks HOPE Services for all the great work you do.
