Outright.com
Have you noticed the new startup on Castro Street? It’s on top of Kapp’s Pizza. It’s called Outright. They are an online book keeping company that makes it simple for people to work for themselves. It is a free, easy-to-use internet-based accounting service. It also includes tax services. It is designed for the self-employed. The entire company is founded by people who had small home based businesses and noticed the need for book keeping services. They are their own users. They understand the needs of small business owners.
People who have small companies in their homes are usually interested in selling their products on ebay, or selling houses, or networking, or making their silver jewelry, or finding customers who need a new a new roof, and they aren’t normally experts at the book keeping aspects of the business. That’s where Outright comes in. They take care of the less pleasant details…
I met Paul O’Brien VP of Marketing for Outright. We had coffee at Red Rock. I asked him what attracted Outright to set up shop in Mountain View. He told me that Mountain View seems to be very friendly to start ups because it has such an active downtown area, it has excellent public transportation to the downtown area and the city of Mountain View is central to the Silicon Valley. It’s true, We are the heart of the entire Silicon Valley. Mountain View still has affordable office space for companies. And it has a culture of entrepreneurship. Startups that open in Mountain View have access to a high concentration of young, well educated employees. The diversity of Mountain View is also attractive to new companies. We have high density housing close enough for employees to walk to work. We’re a bike friendly community with good weather, lots of networking events, and many other start ups to mingle with. I think Outright made a good choice.
Paul told me that he has 4 or 5 meetings a day at Red Rock Coffee (right across the street) and that everyone’s favorite place for lunch is Kapp’s Pizza, downstairs. Outright has about 13 employees right now and they are “actively recruiting” and hope to be at 20 in the next 6 months. They also have extra room in the office space and might consider welcoming other entrepreneurs who are looking for office space to join them until their company is large enough to fill the space. Paul O’Brien can be reached at paul@outright.com. The Chamber of Commerce will be having a ribbon cutting ceremony for Outright on Tuesday, July 20th at 4:00 pm. And a big thank you to Red Rock Coffee and Kapp’s Pizza for keeping everyone at Outright adequately fueled.
