Have you seen cookies by Edna’s Success before? You may have noticed them at Red Rock Coffee or Milk Pail Market here in Mountain View. And they’re also at our Farmer’s Market every Sunday morning. The cookies are fabulous and the family that makes them is really interesting too.

Let’s start with the cookies. The company started with their famous Cashew Cookies, but as anyone can tell you, customers want more than one cookie to choose from. Some of the other favorites that have been added to the selection are Chocolate Chip, all different kinds of Coconut Macaroons, Oatmeal Raisin, Oatmeal Butterscotch, and everyone’s childhood favorite—Snickerdoodles. They also have muffins and Whoopie Pies, even in pumpkin!

Edna’s also has gluten-free and dairy-free cookies, cakes and cupcakes. They accept special requests for all kinds of dietary needs and restrictions. Go ahead and challenge them with your rare and unusual allergies and see if they can come up with an idea for a birthday cake for you. I bet they can!

The small Mountain View company was started by Mary Posey in 1995. Mary was a research chemist and had been baking cookies since she was a small child. She wanted the business to be something that she could do while raising her two sons. She rented a big kitchen and started gathering and perfecting her recipes. It grew quickly and her husband, David, a software engineer soon quit his job in order to help with the cookie baking. Today sons, Brian 19 and Erik 16, help whenever possible. The family also competes in triathlons together. They bake cookies, run, swim and bike together. How cool is that?

“Edna” is the name Mary’s great-grandmother. The first recipe that Mary used in the cookie company, the cashew cookies, was from Edna so it was only fitting that Edna’s name be honored by naming the business after her.

Stop by our Farmers Market next Sunday morning and look for the Posey family selling their cookies. You could always purchase cookies from them for your annual neighborhood cookie exchange! No one has to know that you didn’t make them yourself. Edna’s cookies would also be perfect for board meetings, gifts for employees, to send to someone in the military, for your mail-carrier, the men that rake your yard every week, teachers and your pet-sitter. And I’m pretty sure that your family would love a big stack of them. This local family and their growing cookie company is just another reason that I love Mountain View.

Ready to experiment with an exotic cooking technique or do you just need to know what a wooden spoon looks like? Whole Foods on the El Camino offers cooking classes! Sure you could go by yourself, but it’s more fun with a friend. First watch a professional chef make a mouth-watering handmade pizza, a crème brulee or crispy tofu with curry sauce, then give it a try. After you’ve learned how to be the gourmet cook that you always wanted to be, you’ll need to go to the Mountain View Farmer’s Market. This time you won’t be intimidated by all those unfamiliar vegetables that look like aliens. Well, at least you’ll know what basil looks like and what to do with fennel bulbs. Now you’re ready to browse through the biggest selection of cookbooks this side of the Mississippi. BookBuyers Used Books is the place to go. They have vintage cookbooks dating back to the 1960s. Yummy… find old recipes that would make even your Great Aunt Velma proud.
