Many local merchants are participating in the celebration by displaying NASA memorabilia through the month of December. As you stroll up and down Castro Street be sure to notice NASA posters in the windows of the businesses that are participating.

Tied House has several aircraft models hanging inside the front door of the restaurant. Be sure to look up occasionally while enjoying your favorite beer and their incredible nachos. Meyer Appliance has a Space Shuttle model in the front window. Last time I looked Santa Claus was riding on top of the model. I’m pretty sure that the addition of Santa was courtesy of Meyer Appliance and not NASA.

Jehning Family Museum has posters and photographs on display inside the lock museum. Boutique 4 has more photographs on display in the front windows and just inside the store.

I love the robotic vehicles that are featured in the windows of Book Buyers. They seem to have faces and remind me of an 80s movie about some cute friendly robots. A model of Kitty Hawk 2 is hanging inside Global Beads. NASA people came out and measured the doorway of the bead store to be sure it fit inside. It took 5 people to install the model. Check it out as you buy the beads and supplies that you’ll need to make your Christmas gift items. Kitty Hawk 2 was designed to fly over the surface of Mars and take photographs.

Maston Architect has a model of a High Speed Civil Transport aircraft in the front window. It was a concept vehicle from the 1990s that was meant to reduce commercial flight times by 50%.

Custom Fitness has a biofeedback suit on display. You can go inside the gym to look at it or view it from the windows on the Starbucks side of the building. I really enjoyed perusing Castro and looking at all the NASA models and photographs and thinking about how much our community has gained by having NASA join us 70 years ago. Thanks NASA and we’re looking forward to the next 70 years.

Well, not exactly, but you get to see a rock that came from the Moon! The NASA Exploration Center is a must for the entire family! Check out astronaut suits and helmets, and pieces of meteorites. Watch a video of experiments astronauts did while in outer-space, including drinking tea with chopsticks and see what happens to Alka-Seltzer in a weightless environment—after all, even an astronaut could get an upset tummy! Sport a pair of 3-D glasses and examine the surface of Mars. Peek inside the unmanned space capsule that launched in 1960. And one of the best parts is that you can get real astronaut food in the gift shop! Yummy, freeze dried ice cream sandwiches are hard as a rock and bone-dry, but fun to play with! And after that you might be in to mood for some real ice cream treats. Go to Gelay Gusto on the El Camino near Castro. For gelato, yogurt, or shaved ice, this is the hip new place to go. Dr. George tells us that the Pistachio gelato is his favorite, but he doesn’t want anyone else to know or there might not be any left for him.
