New Skill for Mountain View Day Workers: How to Sew Dog Clothes
It’s true, Mountain View Day Workers are learning how to sew little hoodies for dogs, or any kind of small pet really. Usually people, “employers” go to the Day Worker Center to get someone to help move furniture, do yard work, any number of tasks like those, and many times the senior “employees” get passed over because the jobs are too physically demanding.
That’s how this pet clothing project came about. Etsy seller, and Mountain View resident, Diana Olivares, is volunteering her time to teach the workers how to sew the pet clothing. Of course, there are many details involved in selling dog hoodies, such as figuring out what kinds of colors or patterns Mountain View residents want, selecting just the right business to carry the jackets and hoodies, inventory management, and marketing. Or should the clothing be sold through the Day Worker Center on Escuela? People might like seeing the center and discovering how easy it is to hire someone.
All of these kinds of details are still being worked out, and I’ll update this post as soon as I find out more. It’s empowering for these women, and a few of the men too, to be learning a new skill, and this new project gives them a new purpose in our community.
I stopped by to watch one of the sewing sessions and I brought my dog George. He tried on a few of the jackets and seemed totally comfortable in them. He loved meeting the day workers and snooping around the center.
The materials used, the fabric, thread, sewing machines, everything was donated. All of the items are handmade, with love, at the Day Worker Center. They are planning on having a craft fair in the future, where the dog clothing will be proudly displayed. I’m definitely getting one for George.
Watch the Mountain View Day Worker Center facebook page for details on where you can purchase an item for your furry family member.
Here’s a link to Diana’s Etsy shop, Pawfit. She’s a dog lover, so you know the clothes that she creates are going to be comfortable for your pet. I love Mountain View.
